What Are the Advantages of Using a Voltage Stabilizer for Your Home and Business?

Voltage stabilizers are a vital component of any home or business electrical system. They provide protection against power surges and fluctuations, ensuring that your electronics and appliances remain safe and running efficiently. They also help reduce your electricity bill by regulating the amount of power flowing into your home or office.

What is a Voltage Stabilizer?

A voltage stabilizer is a piece of equipment that keeps the voltage that runs to your appliances and machinery stable. With all the load-shedding we face in South Africa, voltage surges are common. That’s why it’s important for home- and business-owners to protect their electronic devices and electrical equipment from voltage fluctuations.

Why Use a Voltage Stabilizer?

• Protects your Electrical Appliances

Voltage dips can cause irreparable damage to electrical and electronic equipment. A voltage stabilizer will ensure that your devices continue to run smoothly even when the voltage is unstable. Ultimately, they protect your electronic appliances from being destroyed due to voltage fluctuations.

• Saves You Money

Should your appliances get damaged due to unstable voltage, it’s going to cost you money to replace them. Even if you’re insured, you’d likely pay an excess to get a new device. But with a voltage stabilizer, you never have to worry again about replacing broken equipment due to surges.

In addition to this, they’re highly energy efficient, which saves, money on your electricity bill too.

• Improves the Durability of Your Electrical Appliances

Voltage surges don’t always break electronics immediately; however, over time, when the voltage is unstable repeatedly, it can eventually lead to a complete breakdown of that item. Voltage Stabilizers prevent this long-term damage from occurring.

Types of Voltage Stabilizers

At PHD Powerhouse, we offer four types of voltage stabilizers: servo type, electronic type, supervolt, and isolation transformers.

  1. Servo type. These provide a continuous voltage output to avoid the damaging effects of unstable voltage.
  2. Electronic type. These come in both indoor and outdoor variations. The indoor units are available in either single-phase or three-phase power. The outdoor variant comes with an optional outdoor enclosure to keep it safe.
  3. Supervolt. Our supervolt transformers offer constant voltage of 230V, although we can assist if other voltages are required.
  4. Isolation transformers. These transfer electrical power from AC to sensitive equipment to prevent electric shocks.

Voltage stabilizers are good for more than just what it says on the tin. Besides their basic stabilising function, they can come with other features such as zero voltage switching, voltage cut off display, an output start -and -stop mechanism, manual/auto start, voltage cutoff, and more. How Does a Pure Sine Wave Inverter Work?

Pure sine wave inverters are a reliable and affordable option for powering your electronic equipment.

If you’re in South Africa and in need of an electrical device that can convert direct current (DC) electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity for your electronic equipment, a pure sine wave inverter may be the perfect solution. This type of inverter is preferred over other types of inverts because it produces a stable AC power wave that is similar to the electricity supplied by the electric grid.

In this article, we’ll explain how pure sine wave inverters work and the benefits they offer.

Understanding Electrical Waves

Before diving into how pure sine wave inverters work, it’s helpful to understand the basics of electrical waves. An electrical wave is created by alternating the direction of the flow of electrons through a conductor, such as a wire. The shape of the waveform produced depends on the frequency of the alternating current. For AC power systems, the frequency is typically 50 Hertz (Hz) in South Africa and many other countries.

The Advantages of a Pure Sine Wave

So, what makes a pure sine wave superior to other types of electrical waves? A pure sine wave has a smooth, symmetrical waveform that is mathematically described as a sine function. This type of waveform is preferred for electronic equipment because it is less likely to produce annoying humming noises or interference that can affect their performance.

How Pure Sine Wave Inverters Work

Now that we have a better understanding of electrical waves, let’s take a closer look at how pure sine wave inverters work. These inverters use an oscillator circuit to generate a high-frequency AC signal, which is then passed through a transformer to increase or decrease the voltage level as needed. The output of the transformer is then filtered to remove any remaining noise or distortion, resulting in a smooth, pure sine wave output.

Applications of Pure Sine Wave Inverters

Pure sine wave inverters are used in a variety of applications, including renewable energy systems, backup power systems, and portable power supplies. They are particularly useful in situations where clean, stable power is critical, such as when powering sensitive electronic equipment or medical equipment.

Pure sine wave inverters are a reliable and affordable option for those in need of an AC inverter in South Africa. They produce a clean, stable wave output that is similar to the electricity supplied by the electric grid, making them ideal for use with electronic equipment. If you’re tired of dealing with the frustrating humming noises and interference caused by other types of inverters, a pure sine wave inverter may be the perfect solution.

  4. You can extend the life of any electrical equipment. Continuous switching on and off and power surges shorten the life. This is of your expensive electrical devices.

What is the Function of a UPS System? What Purpose Does It Serve?

Your UPS will switch over to battery power when the power goes out. Your UPS device provides continuous battery power.

This depends on the life of the battery.

Battery types vary. The type of batteries also differs from one UPS system to the next. How long the battery lasts depends on how much power you consume during blackouts.

Unannounced power outages are an enormous problem. Your UPS system will give you sufficient time to power down everything from video games to servers.

There is No One Size Fits All for Home UPS Systems

There are 3 categories of UPS systems. These depend on the type of power requirement you need.

The 3 different UPS systems are line-interactive systems, double conversion UPS systems, and standby UPS systems.

Different Power Problems You Could Experience in South Africa

An unstable power supply is so much more than blackouts and load shedding. Other power problems include brown outs, power surges, and voltage sags.

  1. A power surge is a sudden, intense spike in power. Lightning strikes often cause this. They ruin electrical equipment, circuit boards and office equipment.
  2. A blackout is a power loss from a few seconds, and sometimes days at a time.
  3. Brownouts are a drop in the power level for long periods of time. During emergency power shortages, the utility could drop the power level to avoid power cuts.
  4. A power sag is the lowering of input voltage. It is short and quick.
  5. Line noise can degrade or disturb power performance from the grid into your system.

4 Things You Need to Know About Deep Cycle Batteries

Why Do We Refer to These Batteries as Deep Cycle?

The #1 characteristic of deep cycle batteries is the deep discharge. We compare this to other battery types. Deep cycle batteries can discharge almost completely. Depth of discharge improves its performance. This is unlike other batteries.

1. How Does a Cycle Battery Work? What is a Cycle?

With deep discharge batteries, we almost entirely drain the battery of its power. We then recharge the battery to full capacity.

  • If you discharge the battery to even 1/2 of the battery capacity and recharge it, we call it a discharge cycle.
  • The deeper we discharge the battery and recharge it, the deeper the cycle. They supply power over long periods.
  • Manufacturers specifically design this battery type for continuous, deep discharge. We often use them in applications where we need power supply for extended periods.
  • Examples of deep cycle applications include solar energy systems, forklifts, and golf carts.
  • The discharge time is slower than other batteries. This is unlike the high current discharge with small delivery from other batteries. Deep cycle batteries run steadily for longer periods, discharging up to 80% of its charge.

2. Is a Lead Acid Battery the Same as a Deep Cycle Battery?

Battery experts make lead-acid batteries as deep cycle batteries. Take note that not all lead-acid batteries are deep cycle.

Battery manufacturers will specify this on the battery. We often refer to deep cycle lead-acid batteries as marine batteries.

We often use the batteries in marine vehicle applications, hence the name.

3. How Do Deep Cycle Batteries Differ from Other Batteries?

Deep cycle batteries differ from other batteries in 3 ways:

Deep cycle batteries withstand charging and recharging. They have thicker plates than other batteries for this reason.

  • The batteries can store more electricity. This is more than other batteries, thus supplying power over longer periods.
  • By rule of thumb, these types of batteries have a short service life.
  • We use these batteries in many industrial and commercial applications.

Typical Deep Cycle Applications

4. Typical Deep Cycle Applications

Do you need continuous power for longer periods? These are typical applications for consumer devices:

  • Sailing boats that do not have charging facilities.
  • Marine vessels and devices for navigation.
  • Golf carts.
  • Motorised wheelchairs.
  • Remote sites powering of industrial devices.

Solar Batteries

Do Solar Batteries Make a Difference to My Solar System?

You cannot operate a solar system without a solar battery. Which solar battery is the best one for my system and how do they work? Are you ready to go independent of the grid power? If so, you will need enough backup power sources.

South Africans are looking for energy independence from the power grid. Green energy is the answer. Find out about energy storage systems and the batteries that power them. As hours of load shedding increase, so should our efforts. These include finding alternative load management solutions.

What Are Solar Batteries?

Solar batteries are battery storage systems that store solar energy collected from the sun. They use a solar PV system and solar inverter to achieve this. The stored energy enables you to keep your systems and appliances functioning when the sun goes down.

They also generate energy as backup power during power outages. Off-grid systems using solar will need a battery bank where excess solar power can be stored. It is important to get the right battery capacity to store all excess energy that your solar panels may generate.

Do I Need a Solar Battery to Go Off-Grid?

You do not need a solar battery for every solar system, especially if it is just meant to supplement your current power use during sunshine hours. But if you need to use the solar energy at night or if you are going off-grid, you will need solar batteries.

Is Solar Power Affordable and Practical?

A sufficiently large solar system offers enough power requirements for an average home. Electricity from a solar battery is often less expensive per KW than power from the utility. This depends on the tariffs in an area. It also depends on the time of day you use your solar.

What Types of Solar Batteries Work Best for Solar Systems

Solar batteries enjoy a high life-cycle. They enjoy a long battery life. They also need hardly any maintenance because of a high efficiency rate.

Solar batteries need frequent charging. We also discharged them as frequently. Even then, they seldom need replacing. Solar batteries are safe to use – they are as safe to use as any mobile device with a battery.

What to Look for When Choosing a Battery for Solar.

All batteries need to meet safety requirements. Solar batteries are no exception. Safety first, always. PHD offers a wide range of solar batteries that meet all safety requirements.

Here are a couple of pointers to consider when choosing your solar battery:

  • How much are you prepared to invest in your battery (budget)?
  • What is the most cost-effective system for your energy usage?
  • Do you get enough sunshine hours to generate the energy you will need?
  • How much electricity will your solar panel system need to generate?
  • How much electricity does your business or household use?

What Size Battery Will I Need?

Any solar battery you choose should sustain five times your daily usage. That’s right, FIVE times! Choose a high-performance battery if you use plenty of power daily. What size solar battery all depends on how much power you use daily.

4 Popular Solar Battery Choices for Your Solar System

1. Sealed Batteries or Lead-Acid Batteries

Choose from our wide range of sealed lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries are a superb choice for your energy storage system, as they don’t need maintenance.

The solar battery prices for these are higher than for other options. They need precise battery charging. This can result in a shorter lifespan.

Sealed batteries are the obvious solar battery choice. We use these batteries where we need to power long periods without maintenance. Lead-acid battery banks have a reputation for lasting long.

2. Deep Cycle Batteries

Typical applications for deep-cycle batteries include caravans and motorhomes. Although they are not dissimilar to car batteries, they differ in construction. This is the best source of outback power.

These batteries typically only last for a few hundred cycles. Deep cycle batteries are not the best choice for solar power, but they are affordable.

3. Traction Solar Batteries

Common applications we use traction solar batteries include many types of electric vehicles. These include golf carts, mobility scooters, and electric wheelchairs.

Small traction batteries run on 6 and 12 Volts. They need recharging and discharging daily. They enjoy a long life with literally hundreds of discharge cycles.

4. Gel Acid Batteries

Deep-cycle gel batteries are rechargeable. We fit them with a mono bloc catalyst to increase performance and longevity.

You can measure the storage capacity in gel acid batteries in amp hours. This shows the number of amps the battery supplies per hour.

8 ways inverters differ from UPS systems

8 Ways Inverters Differ from UPS Systems

South Africans are now investing in UPS systems and inverters to help keep the lights on. Eskom’s unstable power supply has made this an essential part of our lives. We unpack the differences between inverters and UPS systems.

Get to Know 8 Differences Between UPS Systems and Inverters

The best way to keep your business functioning during an electricity outage is to get the right power backup-up system. Every home and every business differ. The big question here is, which is the right one for you?

We tell you the 8 major differences. These are between inverters and uninterruptible backup power supply systems. This will help you choose the right fit.

1. Your #1 difference is the time it takes for each to supply power.

Perhaps the key difference is the time it takes for each device to supply battery power. We refer to the power from the batteries to the actual device. This happens during power disturbances.

Offline uninterruptible power supply systems will take anything from 3 to 8 milliseconds to reach your electronic devices. Your inverter’s changeover time is between 25 & 500 milliseconds to kick in.

The main reason users choose a UPS over an inverter is to protect sensitive electronic equipment. Sensitive equipment often cannot tolerate a time delay. UPS systems give you continuous power without interruptions. They also give you superior power quality during power outages.

2. True online double-conversion UPS systems regulate and monitor power fluctuations.

Your UPS system will monitor power anomalies such as surges, spikes, and noise. The main reason sensitive electronic devices use UPS as a backup power source is they provide protection. We do not use UPS systems for long-term power supply.

Your invertor cannot monitor power abnormalities. Its job is simply to store and supply common power during power failures.

3. Choose inverters for general power for electrical appliances.

A simple inverter is perfect for a connected load that is unaffected by delays in the power supply from the power grid.

4. By rule of thumb, UPS systems cost more than inverters.

UPS devices comprise more delicate circuitry, thus they cost more than inverters. Inverters comprise more common components and cannot protect sensitive connected devices. If you are concerned about voltage fluctuations, a UPS is a better choice, whereas if you want to power devices via a battery instead of the grip, you can choose an inverter and battery combo.

5. Inverters are incapable of preventing data losses.

UPS devices are far more sophisticated than inverters. When the power goes down, you have enough time to save data. Inverters’ slow transfer time cannot prevent losses in data. Sometimes, there may even be a manual transfer switch, meaning your connected devices will lose power.

6. Inverters and UPS devices both use AC power from backup batteries.

Where most users confuse the two devices is that inverters and UPS devices produce AC power from DC power. UPS devices have more functions than inverters. One of the internal components of a UPS device is an inverter.

7. UPS devices have extra features.

Your UPS device has extra features to that of inverters. These include energy storage and instant response times. They are ideal for critical applications, such as medical equipment.

8. Inverters cannot store electricity.

The AC voltage supply is interrupted if you remove the inverter from the battery. Inverters can only convert power. They cannot store power.

UPS devices provide electric power with no interruptions. However, uninterruptible power is only possible with a fully charged battery. A larger battery capacity will give you more backup time. Often, inverter backup systems include larger batteries than those used in UPS.
